- Sub: thanks for Class Room
-
- Dave,
-
- Let me second one of Eric Jordan’s comments about giving the Class Room
- idea some more time to grow. Try not to get discouraged just because you
- haven’t received a spate of messages thanking you for the wonderful materials
- posted there. It’s just human nature, I think, that people don’t always give a
- lot of appreciative feedback for goodies received.
-
- It used to bother me quite a bit, for example, that I never knew if people
- got any use out of FrameWorks. I felt like we were shipping newsletters out
- into the void, and that that was it — they just fell off the end of the world.
- I’ve since come to understand that that’s just the way people work. The
- occasional word of praise I do receive makes me feel all the better, since I
- know that it’s bucking the tide of human indifference, laziness, or whatever.
-
- As another example, I attended a local meeting of the Seattle MacApp
- Developer’s group last week, and one developer showing off his application just
- happened to mention in passing that he had based part of it on the GridPlay
- application I did up for FrameWorks months and months and months ago. Since
- that article was published, I had never heard Word One about anybody making any
- use of it, and it made me feel really good that here was some developer who had
- gotten something out of the piece. I didn’t feel bad that he’d never thanked me
- for it; on the contrary, I just felt grateful that I happened to be in a
- position to catch the comment at all!
-
- Along the same lines, Keith Rollin linked me a few weeks ago and said he
- didn’t know if the DogCow column was worth continuing, since he had no idea of
- anybody ever read it. Well, I know that people do read and use Keith’s ideas,
- since I’ve heard on a few occasions that that’s so (are you listening, Keith?).
- Again, (and possibly unfortunately), that’s just the way things work. Keith’s
- link, by the way, gave me an opportunity to talk about the subject of
- volunteers and appreciation in the current issue of the newsletter that’s just
- coming back from the printers right now.
-
- Anyway, do hang in. I really think it’s much too soon to pass a negative
- judgment on the success of the Class Room project just because you haven’t
- received a lot of feedback at this point. The evening is young. Although what
- I’ve stated above might sound pessimistic, I don’t feel that way at all. I
- think the project is a great idea. Just keep your ears open, and I’m sure
- you’ll hear an appreciative thank you or two. It does make the job seem
- worthwhile.
